Sail Loft Art Collective seeks to foster community, camaraderie and support for women and non-binary artists living and working on Outer Cape Cod.

The Sail Loft Art Collective is a modern reimagining of the historic Provincetown women’s art club founded in 1916. The original Sail Loft was created specifically as a social and intellectual hub for women artists, meeting in a space where sailmakers once stitched canvas to catch the wind. In that same loft, women gathered to share their art, exchange ideas, support one another, and build momentum.

In November 2022, painter Valerie Isaacs gathered 50 women and non-binary artists for a festive dinner at The Provincetown Commons to establish a group for professional working artists. The Collective honors the Sail Loft Club’s legacy by creating a dedicated space for women (cisgender and transgender) and non-binary artists. The group recognizes and celebrates the underrepresented contributions of women and non-binary artistic voices—an essential thread in the Outer Cape's artistic tapestry.

By defining our community in this way, we commit to cultivating an inclusive space that celebrates diverse lived experiences, challenges gender disparities in the art world, and ensures every member feels genuinely recognized, respected, and supported in their creative practice. When the Collective references "women and non-binary artists," we are actively centering historically underrepresented gender identities within the creative arts. This explicitly includes all women—both cisgender and transgender—as well as non-binary, genderqueer, agender, and gender-expansive individuals.

  • Cisgender: An individual whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.

  • Transgender: An individual whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

  • Non-binary: An umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity falls outside the traditional binary concept of strictly male or female.

  • Genderqueer: An identity used by people whose gender expression or identity does not conform to conventional societal gender norms or expectations.

  • Agender: An identity describing someone who experiences a complete absence of gender or identifies as having no gender at all.

  • Gender-expansive: An inclusive term describing individuals whose gender identity, expression, or play broadens or moves beyond traditional societal definitions of gender.
